Blog #6 The Progressive Era
From every corner of the Earth, the American military is felt and known. We are presented with snippets of information on the news but never the full story. I truly have never wondered why this is so until I learned strong opinions and facts are censored to avoid uproar and issues for the government.
A platform called ANTIWAR is a hub for real news, analysis, and opinion pieces of information from an antiwar perspective. After exploring this site I noticed the articles dissect what the military chooses to do, questions the foreign policy decisions and the motives behind it, and lastly a lot on the cost of war and human impact. The site seemingly is an open field for people who disagree with the presented norms to share their voices and opinions.
Another source called The American Conservative is similar to the ANTIWAR site. Though the name features the word "Conservative" the site presents opinions and perspectives that oppose the conservative narrative. Noticably when talking about foreign policy and military intervention. Articles I dabbled into that caught my eye were primarily on international relations, advocating for all sorts of things like abortion rights, restraints, and the critical role of America as a country for the world.
These sites presented information with an opposite motive. Major news outlets tend to present news on corporate interest, political agendas, or truthfully any information that is useless but people want to know. The information presented on these outlets is what the government wants you to know which is why it's all heavily broadcasted and similar amongst popular news outlets. Also, news that pertains to important events is hidden behind events that are repeatedly talked about just to avoid uprisings.
The smaller sites like the ones I delved into are hidden for a reason. They talk about things that the government doesn't want people to be informed about, they provide all the facts even if it hurts people's feelings. The government-run ran news outlets tend to broadcast a slight side of information while not giving the full facts, and when more and more people begin asking questions about the information being presented other information is talked about to make us forget what we asked. This is a common occurrence in news which is why the sites that talk about EVERYTHING honestly are hidden.
I believe we have to seek out obscure websites to hear these strong antiwar voices because they do not align with mainstream news. They diversify our knowledge and provide a deeper understanding for what is happening around us without our acknowledgment.
